JUST HOW MANY PEOPLE STRUGGLE
WITH SOME FORM OF DISORDERED EATING?

If an individual doesn't fit the clinical description of having an eating disorder they may be wrapped up in Disordered Eating. A person's attitudes about food, weight, and body size and shape may be causing them to have very strict eating and exercise habits that jeopardize their health, happiness and safety.

  • The average American woman is 5'4", weighs 140# and wears a size 14.
  • The "ideal" woman as portrayed by models, Miss America, Barbie dolls, and screen actresses is 5'7", weighs 100#, and wears a size 8.
  • The average weight of a model is 23% lower than that of an average woman.
  • One third of all American women wear a size 16 or larger.
  • 75% of American women are dissatisfied with their appearance.
  • 50% of American women are on a diet at any one time.
  • Young girls are more afraid of becoming fat than they are of nuclear war, cancer, or losing their parents.
  • 50% of 9-year-old girls and 80% of 10-year-old girls have dieted.
  • 90% of high school junior and senior girls diet regularly, even though only 10-15% are over the weight recommended by standard height-weight charts.
